The new peace flag

Our new peace flag combines both the white flag and the rainbow flag. The rainbow is a colour phenomenon created by the refraction, scattering and reflection of white light in drops of water. As the rainbow has strong religious overtones and the rainbow flag is now read more as a symbol for the LGBTQ+ movement, we use the colours of light to represent the theory of colours. Our symbol shows the additive colour mixing scheme for light colours. Unlike the original, we have depicted the inner segment as a circle. It can be read as the earth or as the centre of everything in the colour of peace.

The white flag

Since ancient times, the white flag has been used in various cultures as a sign of peace or neutrality. In war, the waving of a white flag signals the willingness of a party to a conflict to enter into peace negotiations or to surrender.

The rainbow flag

James William van Kirk, a clergyman from Youngstown (Ohio), designed a ‘peace flag’ with rainbow stripes, stars and a globe in 1913. He took this flag on two peace journeys through Europe. The World Peace Congress adopted this flag as the ‘Flag of World Peace’. Since 1961, the rainbow flag (without the globe and stars), also known as the ‘Bandiera della Pace’, has been the symbol of the international peace movement. It was designed by peace activist Aldo Capitini and was first used on 24 September 1961 during a peace march. In 2003, the rainbow flag served as a symbol of protest against the war in Iraq as part of the ‘Pace da tutti i balconi’ (‘Peace from all balconies’) campaign and flew in front of many Italian houses and balconies. Since then, the rainbow flag has established itself as an important symbol of peace throughout Europe, emphasising the importance of the white flag as a symbol of peace. flag as a symbol of peace declined. In the 1970s, the American artist Gilbert Baker designed a rainbow flag for Gay Freedom Day. This international gay and lesbian symbol has only six colours and these are arranged in reverse order. It has no lettering. This symbol has been modified several times and other colours have been added.

Religion and mythology

The rainbow has always been an important element of numerous mythologies and religions.Myths often ascribe to it the role of a mediator or a bridge between the world of gods and humans. In the Old Testament of the Bible, the rainbow symbolises the covenant between God and Noah and all the creatures of the earth. creatures of the earth: ‘And this is my promise:Never again will I send such a great flood to destroy the earth and everything that lives on it.’12-13 He went on to say: ‘I make this covenant with you and all the inhabitants of the earth; I will stand by it forever and ever. The rainbow shall be a sign of this promise.’
