Johannes Robert Schürch (1895-1941) is one of the main representatives of early modernism in Swiss art. In his short career, he created an oeuvre of more than 7,000 works. His depictions of the existential conflicts of human existence are not bound by a zeitgeist, but address universal themes of timeless topicality. The alertness and sensitivity with which Schürch repeatedly sought out the true and authentic in life and in his work make him one of the most fascinating Swiss artists of his generation. More than three decades after the last complete presentation of Schürch's work, this book brings the forgotten artist back into the limelight and takes a fresh look at his oeuvre from a contemporary perspective. The focus is on the washed ink drawings and expressive watercolours from the 1920s and 1930s as well as sketchbooks that have never been published before. The essays shed light on Schürch's work from an art historical, cultural studies and philosophical perspective, build a bridge to astrology and thus provide insights into topics that had a decisive influence on his world view, his thinking and his actions. New poems by Swiss writer Simone Lappert on selected works also lend Schürch's art a lyrical echo in the here and now.
