Burkhard Balthasar. Mexico City, 1999 (Edition)

For his edition, photographer Balthasar Burkhard used heliogravure, a traditional photo printing process with a wide range of halftones. The view of Mexico City photographed from a helicopter gets its distinctive depth effect from the angle of the shot and the aisle of highway and artificially created canal, which extend far into the picture. Like a carpet, the dense settlement of the metropolis spreads out over the wide plain and forms it into a typically urban landscape with geometric patterns.
