Signer Roman. Reisefotos (Catalogue)

Roman Signer's actions made him one of the most internationally known Swiss contemporary artists. His have never been shown before. They were taken over a period of twenty years - involuntarily comical events, constellations of objects created by someone else, snapshots that interfere with images we know from his own work. The photographs are sometimes pictorial, sometimes narrative and almost always humorous. They were taken in Iceland, Poland, Switzerland and other countries. This book of photographs gives insight into a new, characteristic side of Roman Signer's artistic work and is published parallel to the exhibition of the same name in the Aargauer Kunsthaus, Aarau. Roman Signer (born 1938, Appenzell, CH) has been enriching art since the 1970s with his often spectacular actions. Each of his actions is carefully planned and documented, and leads to explosions, collisions and the trajectory of objects through space. Video and photo documentations of his actions have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Completely unknown and not yet published anywhere, on the other hand, are the photographs that Singer has taken on his numerous journeys over the years. The photographs open up a new perspective on the artist's work and enrich the picture we have of Signer's artistic work to date. The English edition of the catalog was published by Steidl-Verlag.
